The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus porrectus (T.Segi) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs
Type locality: Henashi, Nishitsugaru-gun, Aomori Prefecture, Japan (Díaz-Tapia & al. 2017: 10). Holotype: 19.vi.1948; SAP 025867 (Díaz-Tapia & al. 2017: 10). Notes: Type: SAP 025867 (HT fide T. Yoshida, 1998: 1070); type locality: Japan: Mutsu Prov.: Henashi; collector: Y. Sakai (INA).
