Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus upolensis (Grunow) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs
Type information
Type locality: Upolu, Western Samoa (Silva & al. 1996: 547). Lectotype: E.Graeffe; W 7778 (Hollenberg 1968: 94). Notes: Syntypes: W (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017).
