Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterosiphonia is Pterosiphonia cloiophylla (C.Agardh) Falkenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus fibrillosus (Okamura) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Type locality: Shirahama, Chiba Pref., Japan ; (Uwai & Masuda 1999: 227) Lectotype: SAP (Okamura Herbarium); the larger of two specimens (Uwai & Masuda 1999: 227, fig. 1)
