Ulothrix nitens Kützing 1849: 349
Published in: Kützing, F.T. (1849). Species algarum. pp. [i]-vi, [1]-922. Lipsiae [Leipzig]: F.A. Brockhaus.
Publication date: 23-24 July 1849
Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulothrix is Ulothrix tenuissima Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Klebsormidium nitens (Kützing) Lokhorst.
Source of Synonymy
Lokhorst, G.M. (1996). Comparative taxonomic studies on the genus Klebsormidium (Charophyceae) in Europe. Cryptogamic Studies 5: 1-132.
Type Information
Type locality: "In ollis cum Palmella cruenta cl. Meneghini v.s." [most likely from flower pots at the Orto botanico di Padova; see Rindi, Ryšánek & Škaloud (2017)]; (Kützing 1849: 349) Lectotype (designated by Lokhorst 1996): Meneghini; L; sheet 939.67-828 (Lokhorst 1996: 14) Notes: According to Lokhorst (1996: 14), the lectotype of Ulothrix nitens is annotatd as "Cum Palmella cruenta in cubita culta". leg. G. Meneghini. (L sheet 939.67.828). Type locality: In plate with another terrestrial alga Palmella cruenta...Italy (Mikhailyuk et al., 2015: 763). Epitype: strain SAG 13.91, designated by Mikhailyuk et al. (2015: 763) to support the lectotype specified above; the authentic strain of K. nitens is permanently preserved in a metabolically inactive state in the SAG. SAG 13-91 was isolated by E.A. Flint from Tekoa soil (New Zealand), original number No 60/74. However, Rindi, Ryšánek & Škaloud (2017: 86) colcluded "...that the epitype of K. nitens [meaning Ulothrix nitens] selected by Mikhailyuk et al. (2015) most probably does not represent the authentic Ulothrix nitens described by Kützing (1849). For this reason, in our opinion Klebsormidium nitens is a suitable candidate taxon for conservation based on a new epitypification. The new epitype would supersede the epitype selected by Mikhailyuk et al. (2015) and should be a strain isolated from Italy, with morphology corresponding to the original protologue. We suggest our sample F1B (=culture CAUP J 306) would be an appropriate candidate as new epitype for this species."

Nomenclatural note
There is disagreement concerning the authority for Ulothrix nitens. Meneghini in Kützing is cited by Lokhorst (1996) and Novis (2006) and Rindi, Rysánek & Skaloud but Kützing (1849: 349) clearly cited "= Hormidium nitens Meneghini in litt.". Thus the name must be solely attributed to Kützing and not to Meneghini (in Kützing) in accordance with Art. 46.3 of the Melbourne Code. "For the purposes of Art. 46, ascription is the direct association of the name of a person or persons with a new name or description or diagnosis of a taxon. An author citation appearing in a list of synonyms does not constitute ascription of the accepted name, nor does reference to a basionym or a replaced synonym (regardless of bibliographic accuracy) or reference to a homonym, or a formal error." - (31 August 2011) - G.M. Guiry
