The type species (holotype) of the genus Phycodrys is Phycodrys sinuosa (Goodenough & Woodward) Kützing.

Type locality: "Hein Bank, southwest of San Juan Island, Washington" [USA] (Norris & Wynne 1969: 145). Holotype: Phillip Lebednik; July 15, 1968; 8 fathoms. WTU 238048 (Norris & Wynne 1969: 145). Notes: Isotype: UC 1044152 (MIllar 1990: 424).

"...named for Isabella Abbott of Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, in recognition of her extensive and skilled studies on marine algre of the Pacific Coast."
