The type species (lectotype) of the genus Closterium is Closterium lunula Ehrenberg & Hemprich ex Ralfs.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Closterium dianae var. pseudodianae (J.Roy) Willi Krieger.

Tonley Moss [England?]; (Roy 1890: 199, 201) Type: Farquharson; Notes: INA lists the type locality as ''UK: Scotland: Tonley''. Mrs Farquharson Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society resided in Haughton. Haughton is more likely to be in England than in Scotland as is Tonley Moss which appears to be in the Peak district.
