The type species (lectotype) of the genus Oscillatoria is Oscillatoria princeps Vaucher ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Jaaginema pseudogeminatum (G.Schmid) Anagnostidis & Komárek.

Type locality: Germany: Leutra near Jena; (INA 1996) Notes: Silva & Pienaar (2000) note that according to Geitler (1932), the holotype was found in subaerial habitats.
