Nomenclatural note
Considered invalid by Lokhorst as a culture was designated as type. Article 8.4 of the St Louis Code of the ICBN specifies: "Type specimens of names of taxa must be preserved permanently and may not be living plants or cultures. However, cultures of fungi and algae, if preserved in a metabolically inactive state (e.g. by lyophilization or deep-freezing), are acceptable as types." The name is, nevertheless, based on a single gathering and the authors say "In spite of their demonstrated inadequacies (Fig. 1-8), herbarium specimens of the taxa discussed in this paper have been prepared and deposited in the Chicago Natural History Museum."That seems sufficient for validity at the time. - (29 June 2006) - G.M.
