The type species (holotype) of the genus Batrachospermum is Batrachospermum gelatinosum (Linnaeus) De Candolle.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kumanoa hirosei (Kumano & Ratnasabapathy) L.M.Liao
Holotype locality: Sungai Pusu, Selangor, Malaysia (Ratnasabapathy & Kumano 1982: 122). Holotype: Ratnasabapathy No. 1201 b; 2 June 1979; Attached to sides of submerged rock about 10 cm below the surface of clear, quiet and shaded pool waters . Private Herbarium,Department of Botany, University of Malaya 1201 b (Ratnasabapathy & Kumano 1982: 122). Notes: Isotype: Ratnasabapathy No. 1201 b, 2/ VI 1979, Herbarium of Faculty of Science, Kobe University.
