Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type locality: France: Etang de Thau, near Montpelier (Index Nominum Algarum).
