The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus bajacali (Hollenberg) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs
Type locality: at extreme south tip of Isla Guadelupe, Baja California, Mexico (Index Nominum Algarum). Type: EYD 8337; 18.xii. 1949; outer reef pools . HB. AHFH Notes: Isotype: US-42350, 18 Dec. 1949, E.Y. Dawson (Mamoozadeh & Freshwater 2011: 276).

Díaz-Tapia, P., McIvor, L., Freshwater, D.W., Verbruggen, H., Wynne, M.J. & Maggs, C.A. (2017). The genera Melanothamnus Bornet & Falkenberg and Vertebrata S.F.
