The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia determinata (Hollenberg) Savoie & G.W.Saunders
Type locality: Promontory Point, Carmel Bay, Monterey, California (Savoie & Saunder 2018: 13). Holotype: N.L. Gardner 3327; UC 276272 (Savoie & Saunder 2018: 13). Notes: USA: California: Monterey Co.: cove S of Pebble Beach, on rocks in low littoral (INA).
