According to Calado & Moestrup (2005: 115), more extended observations or, preferably, unialgal culture sudies are needed to ascertain whether the organism possesses true chloroplasts. Moestrup & Colado (2018: 356) futher comments: "Amphidinium luteum Skuja (1939, p. 148, pl. X, figs 18-20) was described with 3-4 parietal, discoid, golden-yellow chloroplasts. However, it is uncertain whether the chloroplasts are always present or may be lost, in which case the cells would be indistinguishable from P. lacustris."
This is a freshwater species.
