Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Thalassiosira is Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Minidiscus spinulatus (H.Takano) J.S.Park & J.H.Lee.

Syntype localities: "Found in samples collected from downstream of the River Sumida, Tokyo, Suho-nada, Oita Prefecture, and Dokai Bay, Fukuoka Prefecture, in November 1980. " It is uncertain whether T. proschkinae and T. spinulata are conspecific because the valve structure of T. proschkinae has been variously described. We distinguish these species primarily by areola structure and silicification" (Park et al., 2016: 417). - (19 August 2016) - G.M. Guiry
