The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Navicula crucifera Grunow.

Adjective A (Latin), somewhat beaked, provided with a short beak (Stearn 1973).
