The type species (holotype) of the genus Staurogenia is Staurogenia quadrata (Morren) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lemmermannia triangularis (Chodat) C.Bock & Krienitz.

Type locality: Hofmangava, Fionie [Fünen], Denmark; (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype: figs 14-19 in Chodat 1900 (designated by Komárek 1974): material of the strain SAG 46.81 cryopreserved at the SAG Culture Collection Gottingen, Germany (designated in Bochner et al. 2013: 337). (epitype) (Bock & al. 2013: 337)
