Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Acanthococcus is Acanthococcus antarcticus Hooker f. & Harvey.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mychodea acicularis (J.Agardh) Kraft.

Type locality: "Hab. ad occidentales Novae Hollandiae oras." [New Holland: Australia]; (Agardh 1849: 87) Lectotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh 33993 (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 462) Notes: "Type: Ad litus mari inundatum penins. Levevre, Dec. 16 1847, F. Mueller s.n. (lecto, here designated: MEL0044483; isolecto: MEL5163780–82)." (Kraft & Saunder 2017: 241); however, Kraft & Womersley (1994: 462) had already designated LD 33993 as lectotype and this cannot be superseded.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), acicular, i.e., narrow, stiff, pointed like a needle (Stearn 1973).
