The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Type locality: Pennington Bay, Kangaroo I. South Australia (Womersley 2003: 173). Holotype: Parsons; 17 November 1967; epiphytic on Haplodasya urceolata (Harvey) Parsons, on Cystophora intermedia J. Agardh, sublittoral fringe. AD A31892 (Womersley 2003: 173).
