The type species (holotype) of the genus Ensiculifera is Ensiculifera mexicana Balech.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Matsuokaea loeblichii (El.R.Cox & H.J.Arnott) Zhun Li, K.N.Mertens, H.Gu & H.H.Shin.

Nomenclatural note
Pentapharsodinium trachodium Indelicato & A.R.Loeblich 1986 is an intended validation of this species. According to D'Onofrio & al. (1999), it is a misapplied name and argue (incorrectly) that E. loeblichii is the first validly described Ensiculifera species (i.e., the type of the genus) and thus could not be transferred later to a new genus as proposed by Indelicato & Loeblich (1986). - (10 April 2012) - G.M.
