The type species (lectotype) of the genus Acanthophora is Acanthophora thierryi J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chiracanthia arborea (Harvey) Falkenberg

Type locality: Georgetown, Tasmania (Womersley 2003: 235). Lectotype: Harvey; TCD, Herb. Harvey Alg Aust. Exsicc. 140 I (Womersley 2003: 235). Notes: Isolectotypes MEL, 1554626 and elsewhere (Womersley, 2003).
