The type species (lectotype) of the genus Acanthophora is Acanthophora thierryi J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chiracanthia arborea (Harvey) Falkenberg.

Type Information
Type locality: "Rocks: at low water-mark, in the Tamar, above Georgetown, W. H. H." [Tasmania]; (Harvey 1859: 296) Holotype: W.H. Harvey; TCD; Herb. Harvey Alg Aust. Exsicc. 140 I (Womersley 2003: 235) Notes: Harvey cited "Alg Aust. Exsicc. 140", a single gathering, and the example in TCD is surely the holotype with isotypes distributed elsewhere, such MEL, 1554626 and elsewhere. Womersley (2003) seems to have unnecessarily designated a lectotype.
