Taxonomic notes
"When I've dived in North Spain, its relatively easy to spot B. clavata. It is highly iridescent in the field and seems slightly broader, more substantial than B. asparagoides." (Francis Bunker, 7 July 2020). B. asparagoides is also monoecious whilst B. clavata is dioecious.

Distributional notes
Dixon & Irvine (1977: 159) note that two specimens from the south coast of England were included by Hamel in his original description, but it has not been recently reported from Britian and Ireland (M.D. Guiry, 16 September 2002).
