Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cosmarium is Cosmarium undulatum Corda ex Ralfs.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cosmarium kanetsunae G.J.P.Ramos & C.W.N.Moura.

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
This alga differs from the type in being half the size and the lateral margins of the semicell have four small spines on each side. The side view of semicells is obtriangular and vertical view is fusiform. Cell length 24-25 µm, width 24-26.3 µm, breadth of isthmus 6.3-7.5 µm, thickness 15-17 µm. Cells are about half as large as the type and slightly broader than they are long. They are deeply constructed in the middle, the sinus is narrow and has an undulate margin but is slightly open at the extremity. Semicells are semicircular, basal angles are sharply rounded, lateral margins are convex with four small spines on each side, and the apex is slightly flattened.
