Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Thecadinium is Thecadinium petasatum Kofoid & Skogsberg.

Yashima, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan (Yoshimatsu, Toriumi & Dodge 2004: 216). Holotype: Fig. 31 (epitype) Marine, sand-dwelling. (Yoshimatsu, Toriumi & Dodge 2004: 216). Notes: Isotypes: figs 32 and 33.

General environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells elliptical in shape, photosynthetic with brown chloroplasts, 44-65 µm in length, 23-36 µm in width. Epitheca conical with an apical pore. Cingulum making a strong left-handed spiral. Plate formula: Po, 3', 1a, 6", 5c, 4s, 5"', 1"". Hypotheca conical with one antapical plate.
