The type species (holotype) of the genus Lyngbya is Lyngbya confervoides C.Agardh ex Gomont.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Planktothrix prolifica (Gomont) Anagnostidis & Komárek.

Adjective (Latin), producing offsets, bearing progeny as offshoots (Stearn 1973).
