The type species (lectotype) of the genus Oscillatoria is Oscillatoria princeps Vaucher ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirulina subsalsa Oersted ex Gomont.

Adjective A (Latin), pertaining to the ocean (Stearn 1973).
