Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Scytosiphon is Scytosiphon filum var. lomentarius (Lyngbye) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prasiola velutina (Lyngbye) Trevisan.

Type Information
Type locality: Ad saxa rivuli rapidissimi declivia prope littus Öre Österoë Faroenese; (Lyngbye 1819: 68)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), velvety, densely covered with short soft erect hairs (Stearn 1973).
