Nomenclatural note
Silva, Basson & Moe (1996): "Another earlier homonym [of Ceramium fastigiatum Harvey, 1834b: 303-304] is C. fastigiatum Roth (1800a: 463), a superfluous name for Conferva polymorpha Linnaeus (1753: 1167; type locality: "in Mari Europaeo"). The identity of the species to which C. polymorpha applies is equivocal. Ellis (1768: 424, pl. XVIII: figs. a, A, b, B, B1) described and figured an alga by this name (but without authorship) that clearly is representative of Polysiphonia, and on this basis Duby (1830: 965) made the combination P. polymorpha (Linnaeus) Duby. Tandy (1931), however, presented evidence that Linnaeus had in hand a green alga of uncertain identity. A third earlier homonym is Ceramium fastigiatum Roussel (1806: 87; type locality: Calvados, France), applied to a species of unknown identity." - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
