This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polyopes emarginatus (Kützing) A.J.K.Millar
Type locality: Wagap, New Caledonia (Millar & Prud'homme van Reine 2005: 540). Holotype: Vieillard; 1863; L 940,284-245 (barcode L 0055804) (Millar & Prud'homme van Reine 2005: 540). Notes: Holotype: Vieillard # 2105.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), deep red, from scarlet to carmine and crimson (Stearn 1973).

Millar & Prud'homme van Reine (2005: 540) note that habit and internal anatomy show this species to be the some as Grateloupia emarginata Kützing. Chondrus coccineis Kützing thus becomes a heterotypic synonym of Polyopes emarginatus (Kützing) Millar 2005.
