Origin of species name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).
Named for Charles Paulus Bélanger (1805 - 1881), French botanist and explorer.

This is a freshwater species.
Type locality: near Gengu, coast of Coromandel (Silva 1996-to date).
