Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cymbella is Cymbella cymbiformis C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hannaea arcus (Ehrenberg) R.M.Patrick

Type locality: Carlsbad, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic (Bixby & Jahn 2005: 220). Lectotype: cold mineral spring water. BHUPM: Ehrenberg Collection preparation no. 107-5 (Bixby & Jahn 2005: 220, 219, fig. 5). Notes: Isolectotype (fig. 6): preparation no. 107-6.

Noun (Latin), arc, bow or curve; arch (Stearn 1973).
