Type information
Type locality: Dusky Sound, New Zealand [as "Dusky Bay" in Johansen 1971] (Woelkering, Harvey & Reviers 2015: 245). Lectotype (as "type"): CN (Johansen 1971: 247, fig. 10). Notes: "Lamouroux (1821: 23) based Jania crassa on material (Figs. 3–4) received from “D. Leach” (probably Dr. William Elford Leach, 1790–1836, British medical doctor, zoologist, and marine biologist, based at the Natural History Museum, London [actually the Natural History Department of the British Museum]. Additional data: Seccombe, 1892: 311–312; Stearn, 1981: 163) that came from Dusky Sound, New Zealand." (Woelkerling, Harvey & Reviers 2015: 141). Woelkerling, Harvey & Reviers (2015: 141, fig. 3) also illustrate the lectotype and give details of an isolectotype in PC (PC 0028699); see also Harvey, Woelkering & Reviers (2020: 229).

Adjective A (Latin), thick (Stearn 1973).
