Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cymbella is Cymbella cymbiformis C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cymbopleura decipiens (Hustedt) Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot.

Taxonomic note
Simonsen (1987: 429) writes "There is only little doubt that this species is conspecific with ... Navicula parunculoides Hustedt. The placement of the taxon in
the genus Cymbella appears to be better justified than in Navicula so that the above combination should be considered as the valid one." However, the name Navicula parunculoides Hustedt, 1952 would then have priority. However, Krammer (2003) has referred Navicula parunculoides to Cymbopleura. - (16 February 2023) - M.D. Guiry
