Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Trypanosoma is Trypanosoma sanguinis Gruby.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trypanosoma evansii subsp. gambiense (Dutton) J.Molinari & S.A.Moreno.

Source of Synonymy
Molinari, J. & Moreno, S.A. (2018). Trypanosoma brucei Plimmer & Bradford, 1899 is a synonym of T. evansi (Steel, 1885) according to current knowledge and by application of nomenclature rules. Systematic Parasitology 95(2-3): 249-256, 1 table.
