Syntype localities: "Ad insula Lido Venetiorum; ad Galloprovincialiae" [Shors of Lido in the Veneto; Galloprovincial France] (Agardh 1842: 20).

Adjective (Latin), resembling the mosses, specifically the genus Hypnum (Neal 1993).
