Nomenclatural notes
"This new combination was proposed by Boudouresque & Perret-Boudouresque (1987: 21) who recorded the species from Corsica (France). It is based on Pseudocrouania ischiana Funk, a species described from the Island of Ischia (Italy) by Funk (1955: 115, pl. XVI figs 9-11). Mayhoub (1976: 172), based on descriptions of Funk's (op. cit.) new genus and species as well from the study of the type material of Funk's species, concluded that: "...si l'on pouvait ré-colter des algues identifiables au P. ischiana possédant 4 pleuridies dans la station où Funk avait découvert cette espèce, cela pourrait just-fier la création d'un nouveau genre. Le Pseudocrouania serait défini par le fait qu'il possède un axe dépourvu de cortication et ayant quatre pleuridies et non en raison de ses tétrasporo-cystes à division tétraédrique. Si, au contraire ces algues n'ont que trois pleuridies, nous pensons qu'elles doivent être classées parmi les Crouania attenuata; elles pourraient tout au plus être considérées comme une variété ou une forme de cette espèce.".
