Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Type Information
Lectotype locality: Egerslev Røn, Limfjorden, Denmark; (Silva & al. 1996: 391) Lectotype: H. Petersen; 27 vii 1920; C; 8843 (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 49) Notes: J. Rueness, pers. comm. in Maggs & Hommersand (1993). According to Yoshida (1998: 891) the type is numbered 8844. This type locality was first recorded by Maggs & Hommersand (1993: 49).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Between tide marks at high tide growing on Bryozoa, Balanus or on various algae (Nakamura 1965). Growing on a wide variety of substrata, including bedrock and pebbles, large and small algae, maerl, ascidians, hydroids and dead shells, from extreme low water to 26 m depth, found at greater depths on exposed shores than at sheltered sites, particularly common from 3-10 m depth at sites sheltered from wave action with slight to strong tidal currents, such as in Scottish sealochs (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 51).
