Nomenclatural note
Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot (2007: 191) "The specimens from the Pantanal wetlands in Paraguay conform to the type originating from England as to outlines and stria density (11/10 pm), however differ by (significantly?) lower valve dimensions (55-63 µm long, 11-12 µm broad) and the almost lacking or at most indistinct 'granulation' in the axial area. Conspecificity perhaps as intraspecific offspring, cannot be excluded. On the other hand, conspecificity with Pinnularia acrosphaeria var. parva Krammer appears unlikely mainly because of significantly coarser striae, 7.5-8.5/10 µm. The latter taxon originates from Java, fossil (edible earth). See also another population of P. acrosphaeria from Rio Guama near Belem, Brazil (Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot 1998, figs 168: 1-6) more similar to the type from England than to the Pantanal forms." - (28 August 2023) - M.D. Guiry
