This is the type species (lectotype) of the genus Tellamia.
Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Type locality: Weymouth, Dorset, England (Batters 1892: 169). Lectotype: Batters; September, 1892; In common yellow periwinkle (Littorina obtusata). BM slide 10527 (Nielsen & McLachlan 1986: 282). Notes: Some data from Batters (1895:307-321).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), contorted, literally, ‘powerful, vehement, involved’. (Stearn 1985).
Batters gives a very short description of this in Annals of Botany, Vol. 9, No. 33, p. 169, 1895. He also states his intention to give a full description and figures in a later number of this journal. This he did in Vol. 9, No. 34 , pp. 316 and 321, 1895. - (6 Sep 2007) - Wendy Guiry
