As emphasised by Wynne (1998: 101), this entity may represent the microthalli of various taxa, including Punctaria (Clayton, 1974), Myriotrichia (Loiseaux, 1969), and Asperococcus (Pedersen, 1984). According to John et al. (2004), Ectocarpus terminalis Kütz. is a young filamentous stage of Spongonema tomentosum (Huds.) Kütz., while Hecatonema terminale is based on Ectocarpus teminalis Kütz. sensu Kuck.
This is a marine species.
