The type species (holotype) of the genus Thalassiosira is Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve.

Toepel et al. (2005) cite the authority as "Hasle"; and Thamatrakon et al. (2006: 824) cite the authority as "(Hustedt) Hasle & Heimdal".
