The type species (holotype) of the genus Selenastrum is Selenastrum bibraianum Reinsch.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Monoraphidium capricornutum (Printz) Nygaard.

Adjective (Latin), from the Tropic of Capricorn (Skinner & Entwisle 2006).

Taxonomic note
The alga (and test organism) commonly represented in major culture collections as "Selenastrum capricornutum" NIVA-CHL 1 is not this species but Raphidocelis subcapitata (Korshikov) Nygaard, Komárek, J.Kristiansen & O.M.Skulberg; it is, however, incorrect to treat Selenastrum capricornutum Printz as a synonym of Raphidocelis subcapitata. See Nygaard et al. (1987) and Krienitz et al. (2011) for further information.
