Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Great Pond, Barnstable Co., Mass. (Index Nominum Algarum).

Named for Nellie Carter-Montford (1895-1987), British desmidologist and phycologist.

Nomenclatural notes
