Nomenclatural note
"Such a new combination was proposed by C. Agardh (1828: 117) who reported the species from Venice and Trieste (Italy), but referring also to a specimen from New York (USA) sent to him by Torrey. However, the resulting name is superfluous because among the synonyms C. Agardh indicated Sphaerococcus pedicellatus C. Agardh, a species previously described by himself (C. Agardh, 1822. 321) antedating the supposed basionym Rhodonema elegans G. Martens, described by Martens (1824: 641) from Venice (Italy). But, although superfluous according Art. 52.1 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018), according to Art. 52.4 of ICN (Turland et al., op. cit.) it is legitimate but incorrect because it has a legitimate basionym. See also the note to Dasya pedicellata." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 517). - (07 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
