This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Spongotrichum.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Galaxaura rugosa (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux

Type locality: Vera Cruz [Caribbean México] coll. Binder (Kützing 1847: 37).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1973).

Taxonomic notes
A letter from Sonder to J. Agardh, dated 10 August 1863 comments, "Was Areschoug als Holonema[ beschrieben hat, ist sicher nichts als Spongotrichum dichotomum Kütz. Bei letzterem ist der Standort falsch, es soll anstatt St Croix heissen Vera Cruz. Kützing hat die Pflanze in meinem Zimmer beschrieben, ich habe sie noch, und auch dieselbe Pflanze von Liebmann bei Vera Cruz gesammerlt." ["What Areschoug has described as Holonema is surely nothing other than Spongotrichum dichotomum Kützing. The locality for the latter is wrong, instead of St Croix it should read Vera Cruz.
