The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cosmarium is Cosmarium undulatum Corda ex Ralfs.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Actinotaenium globosum (Bulnheim) Kurt Förster ex Compère.

Taxonomic note
According to Kouwets (1999: 39) "The taxonomy of this species is very confused ... in its original concept it has a circular apical view, and for that reason it has been transferred to the genus Actinotaenium. However, the general absence of figures renders the reoprts mentioned below (inclusive of those of the infraspecific taxa) rather doubtful." - (03 April 2009)
