Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ochromonas is Ochromonas triangulata Vysotskii.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melkoniania moestrupii (R.A.Andersen) R.A.Andersen.

Type locality: Port Philip Bay, Victoria, Australia (approximately 37º51'S 144º55'E); (Andersen 2011: 601) Holotype: NY; plastic TEM block RAA-604 (Andersen 2011: 601) Notes: Isotype: cryopreserved culture CCMP1278. "The designated holotype is the plastic TEM block RAA-604 deposited in the New York Botanical Garden, New York, United States. GenBank Accession numbers U42382 (nuclear SSU rRNA) and EF165174 (plastid encoded rbcL gene) provide molecular characters."
