Nomenclatural note
"Athanasiadis (2016: 62) included Pt. crispum within the subgen. Pterothamnion sect. Tetrakladion Athanasiadis. Members of this section are characterized by the following characters: i. each axial cell forms 4 branches generally subequal (tetrastichous branching); ii. from each branch arise only series of adaxial branchlets of first order which in turn are either adaxially or abaxially branched. In the Mediterranean Sea, this infrageneric taxon is represented only by the above treated species." (Cormaci 2023: 283). - (16 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
Distributional note
Following the revision of the delineation of this taxon by Athanasiadis (1996), records of this species from the Adriatic Sea should be considered with caution (Furnari et al., 1999). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
