Taxonomic note
"This species, as a distinct taxon, was resurrected by Wolf et al. (2011: 1594) based on specimens from the Lagoon of Venice (Italy). Nevertheless, according to Wolf et al. (op. cit.), the distribution area of C. nudiusculum could be wider, since specimens identified as C. ciliatum var. robustum, resulted belonging to that species. Given that either C. nudiusculum or its basionym Echinoceras nudiusculum Kützing were never considered as synonyms of C. ciliatum var. robustum, in our opinion, also specimens identified as C. ciliatum var. ciliatum could be referred to as that species. In fact, its basionym (Echinoceras nudiusculum Kützing) was traditionally considered as a synonym of C. ciliatum [var. ciliatum]. E. nudiusculum, described by Kützing (1842: 739) from Venice (Italy) and later illustrated by himself in his Tabulae Phycologicae (Kützing, 1862: 28, pl. 94/d-f), was combined under the genus Ceramium as C. nudiusculum (Kützing) Rabenhorst by Rabenhorst (1847: 143) and shortly after also by Zanardini (1847: 222) (see Furnari et al., 1999: 16 for the priority of Rabenhorst's combination against that by Zanardini). It should be noted that Hauck (1882: 110), Ardissone (1883: 118) and De Toni (1903: 1474), listed E. nudiusculum (and not C. nudiusculum, probably unaware of Rabenhorst's combination among the synonyms of C. ciliatum [var. ciliatum]. Afterwards, either E. nudiusculum or C. nudiusculum were no more recorded, until Schiffner in Schiffner & Vatova (1937: 169 or p. 245 in 1938 ed., and pl. LIV/5 in both editions), proposed the new combination Ceramium ciliatum var. nudiusculum (Kützing) Schiffner, recording a number of specimens from the Lagoon of Venice (Italy). Also that variety was considered as a synonym of C. ciliatum var. ciliatum (see Furnari et al., 1999: 16)." (Cormaci 2023: 212-3). - (10 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
