The type species (lectotype) of the genus Monostroma is Monostroma bullosum (Roth) Thuret.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ulvaria splendens (Ruprecht) K.L.Vinogradova

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
