Taxonomic note
From phylogenetic analyses based on rbcL sequences and the concatenated data including four different DNA regions from cpDNA and nuclear ribosomal DNA, Lee et al. (2005: 533) conclude that A. sparsum reported from Korea and Japan, A. defectum from North American Pacific and A. densum recognized from North Atlantic should be treated as distinct species rather than as a single cosmopolitan species. Athanasiadis (1996: 161) included A. defectum in the synonymy of Antithamnion densum (Suhr) Howe. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
